Jay Chen is the proud son of Taiwanese immigrants and believes strongly in public service, serving as the president of the Board of Trustees for Mt. San Antonio Community College and a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He’s also a small business owner and is running for Congress in California’s 45th Congressional District to improve the lives of working Californians. With the changes in demographics due to redistricting, Jay has a strong opportunity to win this district, and be a fighter for a thriving democracy. After attending Hacienda Heights public schools and Harvard University, Jay studied Mandarin in a fellowship at Peking University for a year. He then joined a global strategy consulting firm before moving home and starting his own local real estate business. Jay is running for Congress to continue his work fighting the bigotry and hate crimes targeting the AAPI community, and too many other communities, knowing that violence, hate, and conspiracy theories hurt all of us. He also believes we must prioritize accessible and affordable healthcare, increased opportunities and investments in education and classroom funding, all critical components to continue the work of rebuilding communities following the pandemic.

The newly redrawn CA-45 is more Democratic than ever and would have voted Biden+6. Jay’s opponent, freshman incumbent Rep. Michelle Park Steel, currently represents CA-48, of which only 20 percent was drawn into the new CA-45. She won in 2020 by an extremely slim two-point margin, siding with the anti-vax movement, spreading disinformation and calling for Roe v. Wade to be overturned. This is a DCCC Red to Blue race and is rated as a pure Toss Up.
